There’s a Rhino in My Room
(Children)
Author’s Note: This is an excerpt of the text from this story.
There’s a rhino in my room and I’m not sure how he got there.
I had gone to the bathroom to brush my teeth before going to bed and when I got back he was standing right there in the middle of the room. Except he was a rhino in a bedroom so he was actually standing in the middle, on both sides, and in the front and back of my bedroom.
My bed, my toys, my drawing table, and my chest of drawers were all scrunched up between the rhino and the walls. It was a good thing I had just picked my stuffed monkey Alfred up off the floor or else he would have been smushed.
Then I remembered what mom had said. She said that she was going to tell me one last time to get upstairs and get ready for bed and if I didn’t do it right this minute, she would give my room to someone else. Mom said this almost every night. I didn’t think she was serious. I didn’t go upstairs until the next minute.
I could understand giving my room to one of my little sisters who had to share the room down the hall. I could understand giving my room to dad because he snored loud enough to wake up the cat three houses down the street. I could even understand giving it to my friend Benjamin because she always says he is such a sweet boy. But a rhinoceros?! This seemed ridiculous.
